Kenny Rogers Tribute to open 2018 Blossom Festival
By Lorne Eckersley
March 29, 2018

With the recent success of Blossom Festival opening night concerts that have included Johnny Cash and Beatles tributes, John Huscroft is hoping that Kenny Rogers’ music will have similar appeal. “It is getting harder and harder to find acts that will appeal to Creston’s demographic,” Huscroft said last week. “And we got lucky last year, kind of getting a hometown discount.” The 2017 Blossom Festival opening night concert featured Creston’s Daniel Huscroft, Daniel’s now-wife Lindy Ortega and Calgary country rocker JJ Shiplett, along with his band. “Marty Edwards comes highly recommended, and he has performed all over the world,” Huscroft said. Indeed, Edwards has taken his act throughout North America and to Malaysia, England, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. He has also appeared on Oprah and Jay Leno programs. Noting that all performances are live, with no lip-syncing, Edwards sings the tunes that made Kenny Rogers a household favourite for both rock and country music lovers. Through the Years, I Just Dropped In (to see what condition my condition was in), Ruby, The Gambler, Lucille, Islands in the Stream, By Me a Rose and many others are sure to bring back fond memories. And Edwards doesn’t just sound like Rogers, he looks like him, too. “Now, don’t go and get me into any trouble,” Rogers said after meeting Edwards in Billings, Montana. Edwards first put together his act for a benefit concert, meaning it to be a one-time thing. But the response was so overwhelming that he got offers for other shows and now, 20 years later, he’s still going strong, working out of Kelowna. The Kenny Rogers Tribute is made possible, in part, by event sponsors that include the Creston Ramada, Pealow’s Independent and Home Hardware Building Centre. The May 18th show at Prince Charles Theatre will include Blossom Festival opening ceremonies and introduction of the 2018 Citizen of the Year and Junior Citizen of the Year. Tickets will be available at Black Bear Books on April 16 and expected to be in high demand. Ruby might be, as Kenny Rogers sings, takin’ her love to (an unnamed) town, but Marty Edwards is bringing his love of Rogers’ music to Creston on May18th. More information about Edwards can be found at www.kindakenny.com.
